I got bellyaching and I started to create a make new blank custom list. I am adding the fields from excel and it seems I MIGHT take the reason.
Retention characterization seems to be a reserved column and I wonder if that might exist the reason for the error?
A column with this proper name already exists. Please choose a new name.
I also tried another cavalcade - Retention label Applied
I guess my copying the data from someone's list (I don't know their data) might have me copying a bit more data than I should!
Well not so much, removed those both columns and still got the error - An fault occurred while creating your items. [object Object]

I do a examination with an Excel file with 300+ lines and information technology seems that I can't reproduce the event currently in our environment. The feature of creating a SharePoint listing from Excel should work with the file with 300+ lines. So I'd like you to practise a test with the file on another site to see if the event is related to the site and copy office of the information in the Excel file to a newly created file and then create a new listing from the Excel file to cheque the outcome as well.
Most the upshot that y'all see the error "A column with this name already exists. Please choose a new proper noun.", the Memory Label column and the Retention Characterization Applied column are the default preset subconscious columns in SharePoint Online and are used for the retention labels configured for sites in Security and Compliance. So you tin't utilize them for the Excel columns. Y'all may rename columns instead of Memory Label and Retention Label Applied in the Excel file.
For your reference: Create retention labels and utilize them in apps

On-Bounds SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Edition SP1 September 2020 CU, was able to upload the Excel file (same file) and information technology created a custom list.
I did remove the Retention Characterization's for SharePoint Online and I still got the error. Odd that it was able to upload.

If it is convenient, I suggest yous do a examination with the file in another site for united states to confirm whether the issue is related to the specific site you lot are using and practise a test with another file to see if eth issue is related to the specific file.
Meanwhile, I suggest you shut the browser, clear the browser cache, sign out of the account, wait some time, sign into the browser with your account and practise a exam to encounter if the outcome goes abroad in your environs.

Hi Matthew,
I'one thousand wondering if you ever received a solution for this. I am running into the same exact situation.
I have a spreadsheet with three tabs.
The get-go 2 tabs accept lists created successfully, while the third keeps failing. I take tried this on multiple sites and yet no resolution.
I'm curious, practise yous have any cells with extremely long text (upwards of 200 characters)? Some of my cells are to a higher place 220 characters and I'm wondering if that may be the cause.
I am going to test this theory by substituting a placeholder text and then if created successfully, manually enter the text in the new list.
I'll go on you posted.
